Transitioning to ICD-10
Implications of ICD-10 for Your Medical Practice
ICD-10 coding will be a reality this October, but ICD-10 requirements are already impacting provider organizations, as the implementation planning for the transition is well under way. Since the new ICD-10 code set allows for more than 68,000 separate diagnosis codes, both clinical software systems and practice management software functionality must be addressed and updated to accommodate the transition to ICD-10.
Precision does not recommend submitting paper superbills for claims that contain handwritten diagnoses or with ICD-9 codes, as it will be nearly impossible to translate these superbills to ICD-10 effectively without documentation. The development of electronic superbill functionality will be daunting, but necessary. It is likely that many payers will have system-related issues during the ICD-10 transition. Provider education will be necessary to properly navigate these changes and maintain coding accuracy.
It will be imperative to be prepared for and then effectively manage these transitional issues in order to minimize disruption to the revenue cycle process. Please contact Renae Eichholz at firstname.lastname@example.org to discuss software system and workflow issues that may affect your practice or if your practice plans on submitting paper superbills without ICD-10 codes.
